“The person who implements three crappy ideas still has three experiences in the real world more than the person who holds onto their idea waiting for the perfect time & way to implement it.”

This was said to me by a good friend when asking about what and how to write for this site. There is a good chance he realized it, but goes perfectly with my experiences so far (or lack thereof) in youth ministry.

At the end of August of this year, I packed up and moved across the country to try and build a youth group in a small church. My old youth pastor is the Sr. Pastor at a church here in B.C. It’s a re-start and my “group” consists of one girl. Now when I say small church I’m sure there are a lot of people thinking how small can it be? Well on a Sunday morning we have about 10-15 on a good day.

There is so much that I want to do, but having little to no experience I don’t really know where to start. And I have found myself falling into that rut where instead of putting things into action, I’m sitting around and just waiting for the right time. That is something that I want to—and need to—get away from. I need to start working on doing more with the student I do have (for whom I need a female leader: hard to find in a church my size). I want to do a lot of one-on-one work and stuff but there is only so much of that I can do at present. I’m hoping that soon enough I will be able to get someone that can come in as a female leader.

Like I said I have the ideas of what I’d like to do, but I’m waiting for that “perfect moment”. I’m thinking of offering some music lessons, maybe a drum clinic or something. Just to at least get some bodies in and see if there is any interest that lies in any of those kids. But again that’s an idea. Thats where this guy is at for now.

Cheers,
~Marcus

Great thought Marcus. I was talking in my online class today about wondering what it will take for the church to become relevant to people today. While I do feel that there are different influences today then maybe 25 years ago, I asked the question What is it that drew you into the church? I think that question and its answer (which I am still seeking) will go along way with helping us understand the ways to impact our world for Christ.

Glad to hear your still trusting the Lord for your ministry out there!

So far in my experience I have yet to discover that “perfect moment.” Actually, I was thinking about this just yesterday realizing that implementing change can be just as difficult as starting something brand new (or maybe more so).

@Greg – I think you’re right on: trust is the consistent thread.

Hey thanks a lot for the feedback guys. I really appreciate it.
